Food Fasting is a great principle and have excellent health benefits if done correctly. Intermittent fasting is well researched and a practice that many HPC's advise.
The Bible also says that fasting should be done regularly. I believe that its not only for the fact that God wants us to rely on him through prayer but the health benefits thereof will also help us.
If you are new to fasting and want to try it for the first time, you don't have to fast with foods.
